This cover never stood out for me, but I find myself looking at the original cover art surprisingly often.  Considering that I don't care for the character of Jack, that says something about the quality of the painting.

James' comments, from Wizard magazine #171 (January, 2006):

"By rendering Jack in oil paint, he seems more monumental.  His excess, success and ultimate failure are foreshadowed by [brilliant but washed-up film director and actor] Erich von Stroheim's Hollywood star."
