Prelim:  5.5" x 8.5", graphite on bond
Final drawing:  7" x 10.5", graphite on Bristol

Here is an example of a very tight prelim that might actually be preferable to the final drawing.  Sure, the final drawing is a tighter illustration, but only slightly larger, and the prelim has a finished background.
